Welcome to Ella

A small hill-country town with an outsized view

Tucked into the Badulla District of Uva Province, Ella is a small town that has become one of Sri Lanka's most-loved travel destinations — not for grand monuments, but for the landscape itself. Rolling tea estates wrap around a narrow valley known as the Ella Gap, waterfalls tumble down forested slopes, and a slow colonial-era railway line still winds through it all.

Most visitors base themselves here for two or three nights, using Ella as a launchpad for sunrise hikes, tea-factory visits, and a short trip out to the country's most photographed railway bridge. Despite the growing popularity, Ella has kept its relaxed, walkable, one-main-street character.
